Indian television has been undergoing a lot of changes since the last few years. If you analyse the trends of TV viewing in India, you would find that in the pre millennial decade, majority of the audience consisted of women especially those who were house makers. Almost every general entertainment channel in Indian television used to air daily soaps with female protagonists and narratives which mainly appealed to the women. However, the scenario started changing in the recent times when programme creators started introducing new stories for other target audiences. It would be wrong to assume that the new programmes could cater to universal needs. In fact, the programmes have started becoming more genre specific and they now target narrower segments of society. Viacom 18 can be considered to be the pioneer in this domain as it has adopted a strategy to introduce channels in every possible domain on television. It has introduced channels in those domains that had been left untouched by the established media companies of Indian television.

One such genre is comedy. One might debate that comedy has always been one of the most evergreen genres of Indian television. There are a large number of comedy shows that are aired on Indian television. If you surf through the channels, you will find situational comedies, satirical comedies and comedy stage shows being aired on various channels. In the last few years, the genre of stand-up comedy has also gained popularity. However, all these shows aired on the general entertainment channels. There was no single channel which belonged to the comedy genre, before Viacom 18 came up with the idea of launching Comedy Central.

Comedy Central is an Indian version of the popular American channel of the same name. However, the programmes that are aired on the channel keep in mind the sensibilities of Indian people. There is a variety of comic gags, humorous talk shows and sitcoms aired on the channel, which will make all your stress fade away. Viacom 18 also launched a reality show based on the format of the channel, called Comedy central chuckle festival. This festival aims to find budding comedians and provide them with a good platform to perform in front of the nation.
